Northampton-based TPN Member WT Transport has moved to larger premises and grown its fleet with seven more Mercedes Benz trucks.
MD Warren Tattersall says the company’s pallet numbers have grown by 25% over the past year, and like TPN itself, he is determined to plan for growth so that it doesn’t ever affect service levels. But the company believes in servicing customers in the most green and cost-effective manner possible.
“We have chosen seven pre-owned trucks, rather than new,†says Tattersall. “They represent such outstanding value for money and through my dealer, City West Commercials, I can access a huge range of low mileage vehicles which are well priced and available quickly.â€
More than this Tattersall says that hauliers should not buy new purely for prestige, when reusing existing stock is often more environmentally friendly. “Reuse doesn’t just extend to packaging – it’s about the whole way we do business. Trucks are built to run for two decades. Provided a four year old vehicle is sound and has good emissions levels, why would I want a brand new vehicle instead? We need to think green and act green.â€
WT has taken this ‘carbon-light’ approach to its new premises too, choosing to leases part of the TPN regional Hub in Northampton. “Sharing sites makes commercial sense, sweats the assets and means that’s one less warehouse we need to build on a green field,†says Tattersall.
